The 48th Mendeleev International Olympiad in Chemistry for School Pupils was scheduled to take place in Kiev from May 11 to May 18, 2014. However, due to a complicated social and political situation observed in Ukraine, the Organization Committee of the Olympiad requested from the Rector of the Lomonosov MSU, Academician V. Sadovnichy, to hold the 48th Mendeleev International Olympiad in Chemistry for School Pupils on the MSU premises.
This large-scale international event is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The Mendeleev Olympiad is the only Olympiad that, in addition to surviving the dissolution of the USSR, continued to develop until it acquired an international status. The Mendeleev International Olympiad in Chemistry for School Pupils occupies a unique position on the list of prominent subject Olympiads.
Mendeleev school Olympiads became a powerful tool for maintaining and developing a common education area in participating countries. In particular, they give to prize-winners the opportunity to pursue free studies at the Moscow University and other leading higher education institutions of Russia. Those prize-winners of Mendeleev Olympiads who have graduated from secondary education schools are admitted to the first school year of Russian higher education institutions without entrance examinations.
The Olympiad consists of 3 rounds — two theoretic rounds to be held consecutively and one practical round which will conclude this exciting intellectual competition. Diverse trips and culture events have been scheduled for participants, namely, visits to Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, Kubinka Tank Museum, and a unique culture and education centre “ETNOMIR.”
The 48th Mendeleev International Olympiad will welcome 100 participants representing school pupils who were awarded prizes at national chemistry Olympiads in 16 different countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Nigeria, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The gala award ceremony held to recognize the winners of the Mendeleev International Olympiad in Chemistry for School Pupils will take place on May 18 at the MSU Pension “Universitetsky.”
